8:00PM to 10:00PM

His unique background is an Italian musician in love with both American roots music as well as the music of his native country, Gambetta’s playing and singing stand out for their intimate emotions, communication, research in tone, sobriety and humor. His music is inspired and modestly avoids relying solely on his high level of technical excellence, but also reveals the innermost feelings of a brilliant, playful mind that is always exploring and innovating while staying firmly rooted in tradition. With America in his heart and his roots in the sun and the olive trees of the Mediterranean sea, he naturally and seamlessly bridges the shores of the two continents, creating in spite of the interposed ocean a musical “koiné” (fusion) where American root music and Ligurian tradition, emigration songs and folk ballads, steel string guitars and vintage harp guitars not only co-exist but interact, weaving a deep dialog unaware of any rigid classification.

John Muir Shares Tales

John Muir Shares Tales

Saturday, 2/3/2018
7:00pm - 9:00pm

The Foothill Conservancy is hosting critically acclaimed actor Lee Stetson portraying the renowned Yosemite naturalist, John Muir.

“We are excited to have Lee coming to our area to perform "John Muir is back, and man, is he ticked off!”, said Foothill Conservancy Executive Director Amanda Nelson. “Muir’s life was extraordinary, and Lee’s portrayal of Muir is an intimate sharing of the humor, intelligence and tremendous passion of one of the world’s best-known and admired naturalists.”

Lee Stetson has been performing as John Muir for over 30 years at universities, museums and parks from Washington, D.C. to Hawaii. He portrayed Muir on Ken Burn’s award-winning series National Parks – America’s Best Idea. Stetson also performs at Yosemite Park, where Muir lived for approximately six years.

John Muir emigrated from Scotland to Wisconsin with his family in 1838. His first visit to Yosemite was in 1868, when he was thirty years old. Muir was so taken with the area’s natural beauty and wilderness that he remained for several years, working in jobs including sheepherder and saw miller. He was instrumental in advocating for the creation of Yosemite National Park.Founder of the Sierra Club, Muir is perhaps best known for his passionate advocacy to save wilderness, particularly the Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite Park, threatened with flooding when the O’Shaunessy Dam was proposed. What some label the first environmental fight ended unsuccessfully in 1913 when Congress approved the dam project.

“John Muir’s love for the wilderness, and his desire to protect it, was based on his seeing the connection and interdependency of natural ecosystems.” said Nelson. “Muir understood that protecting natural systems was key to ensuring a healthy environment for both people and wildlife. His lessons live on today as we work to protect ecosystems that provide the clean water, productive soils and diverse habitats humans and wildlife need to survive.”

Beer, wine, and snacks will be available for purchase at the event.

Tickets are on sale now. Tickets $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Purchase tickets at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3214827 or contact Carolyn at 209-223-3508, or carolyn@foothillconservancy.org

John Gorka at Sutter Creek Theatre

John Gorka at Sutter Creek Theatre

Sunday
February 11, 2018
7:00PM - 9:00PM
$25-$28

Rising from a milieu of lovelorn singer-songwriters, John Gorka illuminates instead with his trademark wordplay, twisting and trying words and phrases, in a way a balloon artist creates complex creatures from simple balloons. Few contemporary songwriters coax language a deftly as Gorka. For over two decades, Gorka’s keen ear has picked up the stories of those along his path, folding them into poetry and song.

It may be her haunting, husky voice that first grabs a listener, the way it glides over melodies like smoke, but it’s the songwriting that Spicer really wants you to hear. It fuses together the different places she calls home:
Raised in rural Pennyslvania, currently residing in California, spending half the year in Austin, the topography covers languid farm landscapes, red dirt Americana, and an occasional turn down a dark alley with flickering neon.

Fred Eaglesmith & Tif Ginn

Saturday
February17, 2018
8:00pm
$25-$28

Eaglesmith is a veteran of the music industry and at the same time is about as far away from actually participating in today’s music industry as one could be. Never operating within anyone’s boundaries, he continues to set the standard for independent artists everywhere. Award-winning, acclaimed singer-songwriter Fred Eaglesmith’s talent for story telling through his songs continues to draw universal appeal and pushes the craft to a higher form. Fred has spent 42 years on the road, has recorded 22 albums, and 5 different band configurations.

His latest album “Standard” (2017) is by “…one of the genre’s most gifted lyricists and wildly entertaining performers. A dozen songs are given spare, wide-open arrangements that allow Eaglesmith’s deliciously grizzled vocals and the richly rendered emotions of his lyrics resonate deeply en route to a reassuringly uplifting closing number, the exquisitely bittersweet ‘Mr. Rainbow.’” – Los Angeles Times

Tif Ginn is a gutsy, amazing singer and a transcendent songwriter who has spent most of her life touring and playing music. Her impressive, sultry vocals and glorious harmonies with Fred, along with her multiple instrument additions to the show will have you in awe. This girl has it all, including Fred.
